LASIK — Laser Eye Surgery

LASIK is a type of Refractive sugery. This kind of surgery uses a laser to treat vision problems caused by refractive errors. You have a refractive error when your eye does not refract (bend) light properly. For you to see clearly, light rays must travel through your corneaand lens. The cornea and lens refract the light so it lands on the retina. The retina turns light into signals that travel to your brain and become images. With refractive errors, the shape of your cornea or lens keeps light from bending properly. When light is not focused on the retina as it should be, your vision is blurry.

With LASIK, your optalmologist uses a laser to change the shape of your cornea. This laser eye surgery improves the way light rays are focused on the retina. LASIK is used to treat myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness) and astigatism.

The goal of LASIK is to correct your refractive error to improve your vision. LASIK eye surgery may reduce your need for eyeglasses or contact lenses. In some cases, it may even allow you to do without them completely.

How is LASIK performed?

LASIK eye surgery is the best known and most commonly performed laser refractive surgery to correct vision problems. Laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis (LASIK) can be an alternative to glasses or contact lenses.

During LASIK surgery, a special type of cutting laser is used to precisely change the shape of the dome-shaped clear tissue at the front of your eye (cornea) to improve vision.

In eyes with normal vision, the cornea bends (refracts) light precisely onto the retina at the back of the eye. But with nearsightedness (myopia), farsightedness (hyperopia) or astigmatism, the light is bent incorrectly, resulting in blurred vision.

Glasses or contact lenses can correct vision, but reshaping the cornea itself also will provide the necessary refraction.

LASIK and refractive surgery at a glance

LASIK can be performed on any patient above 18 years of age wanting to get rid of their glasses, provided they are deemed to be “suitable candidates” on our pre-operative diagnostic tests.

For those who are unsuitable for LASIK surgery, they are other options to get rid of glasses, which may or may not be laser based surgeries.

LASIK surgery is one of the safest surgeries being performed worldwide, with a 99.5% complication free success rate.

LASIK surgery is basically a procedure done to remove a person’s glasses by changing the shape of the cornea.

The shape of the cornea is changed with the help of a very accurate, precise, efficient and superfast laser machine called the Excimer laser.
